President Dwight Eisenhower, Republican, November 8, 1954:
"Should any political party attempt to
abolish social security, unemployment insurance and eliminate labor laws
and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political
history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes that you
can do these things. Among them are a few Texas oil millionaires, and an
occasional politician or businessman from other areas. Their number is negligible
and they are stupid."
President Abraham Lincoln, Republican, November 21, 1864:
"I see in the near future a crisis approaching
that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country .
. . . corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high
places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to
prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all
wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed."
